Lou’s Pub owner opens new restaurant next door in Birmingham’s Lakeview District
There’s a new moon rising in Birmingham’s Lakeview District.
Mia Luna, an Italian-themed restaurant whose menu features house-made pastrami and linguini with Bolognese sauce, opens for lunch and dinner starting today in the former Rags’ Italian Bistro location next to Lou’s Pub & Package Store on 29th Street South.
“Mia Luna” is Italian for “my moon,” and “Mia” is also owner Michael Carpri’s 5-year-old daughter’s name.
“Mia Luna is what I wanted to name my daughter, and everybody talked me out of it and said it sounded like a pizza joint,” Carpri tells AL.com. “So we named her Mia Catherine.”
And Carpri opened a restaurant instead.
Carpri, who bought Lou’s Pub & Package Store after its founder and namesake Louis Zaden died in August 2008, says he agreed on an offer with the Rags’ owner Bobby Lorino to buy his equipment and furnishings after that restaurant closed last fall. Boehm Realty is the landlord.
The pub and the bistro shared a patio, and customers who went to Rags’ to eat often stopped by Lou’s to drink, and vice versa.
For several weeks now, while he has been getting ready to open his restaurant, Carpri has served his Lou’s customers select items from the Mia Luna menu to give them a taste of what’s to come.
The Mia Luna dining room seats 32 with room for another 10 to 12 on the patio.
